Guy Martin will race on a Mugen Electric Bike at Isle of Man TT 2017

It was big news when Guy Martin announced that he will be returning to the Isle of Man TT races for 2017. It was even bigger news that he got a ride with the factory Honda Racing team together with John McGuinness aka “The King of the Mountain” on the new Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP2. Now, he’s going to participate again in the all-electric race category of Isle of Man TT, the TT Zero.

Together with John McGuinness, the legendary duo will head to Tokyo in April to take a look at the sixth generation electric bike from Team Mugen dubbed the “Shinden Roku”. The team has had massive successes over the past years ever since they entered the TT Zero back in 2012. They’ve been on the podium ever since and have actually won the races for the past three years with McGuiness and New Zealander rider, Bruce Anstey.

With great success and talented riders, team Mugen is looking to defend their crown as the most successful all-electric race team in the Isle of Man TT races. The other goal that both McGuinness and Martin will try to achieve is to hopefully break the 120mph barrier on the Mugen Shinden Roku bikes. That’s around 193kmh on a race bike that is FULLY-ELECTRIC. And who better to make that happen than the 23-time TT winner John McGuiness and one of the most popular figures in the racing world, Guy Martin.

Mugen Shinden (Not-Quite-A-Honda) Electric Racebike Revealed - Video

Honda has revealed – Oops. What we meant to say was the Honda-associated Mugen Motorsports has revealed its electric race bike which will enter the 2012 TT Zero on the Isle of Man.

Let’s get the caveats out of the way first. Mugen, a Japanese tuning company, is not an actual Honda company. Mugen was, however, founded by Hirotoshi Honda, the son of Honda founder Soichiro Honda. Mugen also specializes in tuning Honda cars and motorcycles, but officially, the two companies are separate entities.

That’s what makes the newly unveiled Mugen Shinden electric race bike so intriguing. The Shinden may not be an official Honda electric racebike, but it’s the next closest thing.

With that Honda connection, the obvious move is to compare the Shinden to the Honda RC-E electric sportbike concept which was unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show in November. Honda never revealed specifications for the RC-E, but we can observe some physical similarities and differences between the two motorcycles.

The frame and swingarm are different, with the Shinden sporting a twin-spar frame and swingarm made of carbon fiber. The Shinden also sports suspension from Showa (another close associate of Honda) rather than the concept bike’s Ohlins set-up. Mugen also installed Nissin brakes while Honda used Brembos on the RC-E.

Design-wise, the Shinden is sleeker with a sharper rear and the upward-sloping belly pan looks less bulky than the bottom of the RC-E (pictured below). The positioning of the motor appears to be the same however, serving extra duty as the swingarm pivot.

The Shinden uses a three-phase brushless DC motor claiming an output of 120 hp and 162 ft-lb. of torque. The motor is powered by a 370V lithium-ion battery. The large battery comes at a cost however, with Mugen claiming the Shinden weighs about 260 kg (573 pounds).

The name “Shinden” translates to “God of Electricity“, which suggests the high hopes Mugen has for the bike in the TT Zero race. Mugen intends to win the time-trial format race as well as claim the 10,000 pound (US$15,867) bounty for being the first electric bike to set an average speed of 100 mph on the Isle of Man’s 37.75-mile Mountain Course.

Helping tip the odds in Mugen’s favor is its rider, John McGuinness, a multiple-time winner at the Isle of Man and the lap record holder with an average speed of 131.578 mph. And yes, that lap was completed on a Honda.

“I’ve followed the electric bike race for the last couple of years and I was keen to take part if the bike was right,” says McGuinness. “There are a few other good machines in the line up so I think there’s going to be a bit of competition this year, particularly with the chance to make history with the first 100mph lap.”

Mugen Introduces Electric Motorcross Race Bike “E.Rex”

  • The Mugen E.Rex Concept Bike was introduced during the Tokyo Motorcycle Show last weekend

  • The concept off-road bike was a collaboration between Mugen and Honda

Mugen displayed their latest concept bike; the E.Rex. During the Tokyo Motorcycle Show 2017 that happened this past weekend meant that there’s a high possibility the motorcross industry is heading towards the Earth-friendly vibe.

The bike’s theme and overall look might not be something that most people will agree on especially with the dinosaur facade. If you can find your way around the questionable looks, you will start noticing that Mugen and Honda went to great lengths to give the E.Rex the best equipments available. The only reason why we think they went for this look was to be as a loud as possible so that anyone and everyone will notice this e-bike.

Note the high-end Showa front forks with Nissin suspensions at the back. Most bikers will have high expectations and respect upon seeing these two brand names. Also note that the brakes are garnished with a huge dose of carbon fibre goodness. Only the best when you’re trying to get noticed at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show.

Mugen Shinden Roku

Mugen is not new in the world of electric-powered motorcycles. In fact, they have been highly successful in the Isle of Man TT races. For the past few years, they have gathered continuous wins with the likes of John McGuiness and Guy Martin piloting their Shinden electric race bikes.

Mugen Shinden Roku

Their latest 163hp “Shinden Roku” with 210Nm of torque is the sixth generation race bike that has high hopes of breaking the 200mph speed barrier in this year’s Tourist Trophy at the Isle of Man. This fully electric race bike has six more horsepower and 103Nm more torque than the Ducati Panigale 959. All that power and torque without burning a single drop of fuel.

KTM Freeride E

Although Mugen and Honda are only starting to dip their feet in the electric motorcross world, this move might be a big step into the future of motorcross racing. The fact that KTM has been heavily researching, developing and manufacturing their present Freeride E range, it’s not long before this trend catches on.

Mugen takes IoM TT Zero (electric motorcycle race) with 117.366 mph lap

After dominating all three practice sessions for the sixth running of the TT ZERO event setting a new lap record with every session, the Mugen Shinden San electric racebike delivered a clear 1-2 victory. Across the three sessions and race, average speeds have increased 6 mph, surpassing Joey Dunlop's 115.2 mph lap record from 1981 set on a Yamaha TZ750. It is very exciting to watch such massive progress being made in seemingly real time.

With four-time champions MotoCzysz staying away in 2014, the Isle of Man TT Zero race for electric motorcycles finally looks ready to fall to the Mugen Shinden San electric racebike, though the speeds continue to skyrocket past previous lap records with each session.

With two practices down for the 2014 TT Zero race, previous lap records from 1975 (Mick Grant Kawasaki KR750 two-stroke triple) and 1976 (John Williams Suzuki RG500 two-stroke square four) were obliterated.

In the third session, both Mugen teammates (John McGuiness and Bruce Anstey), broke all previous electric bike records with 115.597 mph and 113.642 mph respectively.

McGuinness' time beats both the 1980 and 1981 Joey Dunlop lap records set on a Yamaha TZ750 and Honda RSC1000 and represents a 6 mph improvement over the best time last year.

It's now down to energy management as to how quick the Mugen can go in the race. If it improves 50% as much again over the times posted in Q3, McGuinness or Anstey will reach 1984 levels (Dunlop on a Honda RS500 triple - an identical bike took Freddie Spencer to his first World 500cc title).

If it improves six seconds from Q3 to the race, it will reach 1989 speeds. Quite clearly we're seeing something very special evolve with each session of this event. Mugen is making significant progress every session and thanks to a quirk of fate, we are getting to see how many years of progress is being achieved by comparison with previous lap records.

Joey Dunlop was the king of the TT during the eighties, setting the lap record at 115.2 mph on the water-cooled two-stroke Yamaha TZ750 in 1980, then pushing it to 115.4 in 1981 on the Honda RSC1000 (four-stroke) and finally to 118.5 in 1984 on the three-cyclinder Honda two-stroke RS500

In the electric bike R&D department, there appears to be massive development and while we know there has been collaboration with Mission Motors, it's not like Mugen doesn't know the odd thing or two about building race bikes. EVERY single part of the 2014 bike is different.

The 100 kW (134 hp) oil-cooled three-phase brushless motor now comes in a package that is lighter (though at 240 kg it’s not light), smaller and with improved aerodynamics.

Mission Motors has apparently been working with Mugen, though the extent of Mission’s involvement with the Mugen Shinden San is unclear.

Last month Mission’s Director of Powertrain Systems Engineering, Mark Sherwood announced the company was introducing some exciting new technology for the Mugen Shinden San race bikes. Sherwood said, "Our engineers have worked alongside Team Mugen Shinden to learn from their race data. For the 2014 Isle of Man TT, we have engaged in rapid new product development that truly raises the bar for electric motorcycles on and off the racetrack.”

The 2014 Mugen Shinden San electric racebike

The new Mugen Shinden San has an increased battery capacity and new control systems managing the immense torque of the motor which produces 162 ft.-lbs. of torque (220 Nm).

Accordingly, with none of the other elite electric bike teams in attendance, it appears to be a race between Mugen teammates John McGuiness and Bruce Anstey.

Top speeds increase every year too, with the Sulby speed trap clocking Anstey at 163.3 mph in the second practice session and McGuinness at 164.9 mph in the first practice session

The institution that is TT Week on the Island continues and you can watch the action unfold through the official IOM TT site and listen to the races via the streaming TT Live radio.

As far as the evolution of the electric racebike, the lap record of the winning machine this year represents an increase of over 7 mph lap speed average of a 30 mile course - if this rate of progress continues, the electric racing motorcycle should reach parity (at least inside the curious confines of a single 30 mile stretch of road on an island off the coast of England) with the internal combustion engined motorcycle sometime in the next five years.

Power will not be an issue in bridging this gap as electric motors can be far more powerful than they are, far exceeding the 250 hp MotoGP bike output.

The limiting factor is storing the energy to power that engine.

Just a final note that the winning Team Mugen issued a statement to us during the week emphasising that the team is a Mugen internal programme and is not associated with Honda.
