Pioneer 1000, собираемый  с использованием лучших деталей со всего мира, представлен в четырёх конфигурациях: Pioneer 1000, Pioneer 1000 EPS, Pioneer 1000-5 и Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe.

Каждая модель Pioneer 1000 может перевозить до 450 килограммов в грузовой платформе и буксировать до 900 килограммов.

Спереди и сзади стоит независимая подвеска на сдвоенных параллельных А-образных рычагах; спереди ход подвески составляет 268 миллиметров, сзади — 254 миллиметра.

И трёхместная, и пятиместная модель оснащены системой привода на все четыре колеса, а также вспомогательной трансмиссией с повышенной/пониженной передачей и четырёхрежимным механизмом блокировки дифференциала. Пятиместный Pioneer 1000-5 оборудован автоматически выравнивающейся задней подвеской и полноразмерной откидной грузовой платформой с эксклюзивными сиденьями Honda QuickFlip. Японская Honda представила новый утилитарный мотовездеход Pioneer 1000. Компания прочувствовала ситуацию на рынке и произвела обновление своей модели от 2014 года. От японцев потребовались серьезные усилия, но объединив опыт производства автомобилей, мотоциклов и квадроциклов Honda создала действительно отличную машину. Новый мотовездеход Honda Pioneer 1000сами японцы назвали «самой важной внедорожной новинкой за последние 15-ть лет». Действительно, Хонда обладает внушительным опытом и ресурсами. Но надо смотреть правде в глаза, такие модели как Polaris Ranger, Can-Am Defender и Kawasaki Mule Pro-FX уже заняли свои позиции и сдвинуть их очень и очень не просто. Планка для мотовездеходов поднята очень высоко! В свое время модель Pioneer 700 произвела фурор на рынке UTV техники и до сих пор она является инновационной машиной, которая демонстрирует отличные характеристики. Но сегодня Хонда предлагает больше. 

Новые мотовездеходы от Honda предлагаются в двух модификациях - Pioneer 1000 и Pioneer 1000-5, которые базируются практически на идентичном шасси Pioneer 700. Но теперь всё серьезнее! Модификация Pioneer 1000 является трёхместной с грузовым кузовом, а Pioneer 1000-5 является пятиместной моделью, в которой имеется задний ряд сидений с распашными дверьми, при этом сидения складываются, увеличивая объём кузова. Ручки отпирания дверей находятся внутри на картах самих дверей. Вполне разумное решение, теперь вам не придется пачкать руки. Две модификации является также правильным решением. Honda понимает, что покупателям нужно предлагать дополнительные возможности по вместимости пассажиров и объёму грузового кузова. Всего Хонда предлагает четыре конфигурации нового мотовездехода: Pioneer 1000, Pioneer 1000 EPS, Pioneer 1000-5 и Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe.

Honda провела хорошую работу над дизайном экстерьера. Теперь машина стала более гармоничной. Цвет дверей соответствует окраске панелей кузова, ноги и нижняя часть тела хорошо защищены, центральное сидение переднего ряда приподнято и сдвинуто немного вперед, таким образом, передние пассажиры чувствуют себя более комфортно. Ну, а возможность сложить два задних сидения Honda QuickFlip и получить большой грузовой отсек, это просто отлично.

 

Новые мотовездеходы Honda Pioneer 1000. Только передовые технологии

Что касается технической стороны. Honda всегда славилась отличными двигателями и трансмиссиями. В случае с новым мотовездеходом Pioneer 1000 японцы сделали неожиданный шаг. Первое это двигатель. Хонда для своей новинки специально произвела абсолютно новый мотор с максимальным объёмом из когда либо производившихся для ATV и UTV техники Honda. Двухцилиндровая параллельная, четырёхтактная «двойка» с уникальной «хондовской» одновальной распределительной системой OHC Unicam имеет  объём 999 куб.см. и жидкостное охлаждение. Питание двигателю обеспечивает полноценный инжектор PGM-FI с 44 мм. дроссельной заслонкой. Те, кто знаком с кроссовыми мотоциклами Honda, знает, что ГРМ Unicam облегчает двигатель и делает его весьма отзывчивым и эластичным. Сам двигатель был специально размещён не по центру шасси, для обеспечения оптимальных углов выхода карданных валов из трансмиссии, что позволяет избежать определённых потерь на трение. Само шасси представляет собой модульную наборную конструкцию, в которой элементы соединены специальными высокопрочными болтами. Казалось бы, такое шасси должно проявить определённую гибкость и низкую жёсткость, но на самом деле даже в сложных виражах машина прекрасно себя ведёт и нет ни единого намека на кручение конструкции.

Инженеры Honda заявили, что в мощных утилитарных мотовездеходах нет места таким «нежным» трансмиссиям как ременной вариатор CVT. Тут японцы применили свой опыт участия в гонках Formula-1 и создали для своего Pioneer 1000 абсолютно уникальную полностью автоматическую шестискоростную трансмиссию с двойным сцеплением (DCT). Два сцепления, каждое из которых контролирует свой набор шестерён, и производит моментальное переключение без разрыва передачи крутящего момента. В итоге имеем плавное и очень быстрое переключение передач. Вся система контролируется процессором и вам остается только наслаждаться беспрерывной мощностью этой прекрасной машины.

На панели мотовездехода расположен селектор управления режимами трансмиссии DCT – их три: полный автомат (Fully Automatic), спортивный (Sport Mode) или ручной (Fully Manual). В первом случае система работает в классическом режиме автомата, во втором режиме электроника позволяет двигателю крутиться до более высоких оборотов на каждой из передач, а третий ручной режим позволяет вам полностью взять под контроль работу трансмиссии – в данном варианте переключение передач производится посредством подрулевых лепестков. Это действительно поражает…Ах да, чуть было не забыли. Трансмиссия DCT от Honda является адаптивной, то есть в режиме Fully Automatic электроника отслеживает ваш стиль вождения и подстраивается под него, добиваясь максимальной экономии топлива. Рабочие режимы у трансмиссии такие: 2WD, 4WD и TURF плюс блокировка дифференциала.

Передняя и задняя подвеска собрана на А-образных рычагах с ходом в 270 мм. по фронту и 255 мм. по реару. Пятиместная версия мотовездехода имеет более мощные задние амортизаторы и клиренс в 315 мм. Рулевое управление нового мотовездехода Honda Pioneer 1000 оснащается электрическим усилителем руля EPS. Работает он отлично. Усилие чёткое, в виражах нарастает не навязчиво, связь отменная. Тут не добавить, не убавить. Грузоподъёмность кузова составляет 450 кг., а масса буксируемого груза до 900 кг.. Мотовездеход обут в 4-слойные шины для квадроцикла Maxxis Bighorn размерности 27x9-14 по фронту и 27x11-14 по реару. Кроме всего прочего, впрочем как обычно, для мотовездехода Honda Pioneer 1000 предлагается большое количество дополнительных аксессуаров: решётки на багажник, мягкая или жёсткая крыша, лобовое стекло, лебедки, наборы инструментов и т.д.

Подводя итог, можно с уверенностью сказать, что Honda вывела на рынок очень сильного игрока в лице нового Pioneer 1000. Прекрасный мотор, уникальная трансмиссия, трансформируемые сидения, надёжная рама, хорошая подвеска плюс качественные аксессуары при цене в 17199$.

TransmissionThe side-by-side market’s first fully Automatic DCT is a superior system, the perfect transmission for a flagship SxS model—and no one does DCT better than Honda, as evidenced by the sophisticated transmission on the Pioneer 1000.

  • Six-speed automatic on all four types; those equipped with EPS also have a sport mode switch and manual paddle shifters.
  • Advanced shift logic: The system monitors variables including throttle position and input, engine rpm, vehicle speed and brake input to determine driving style. During relaxed input, the transmission maintains a low rpm for a quiet cabin, low vibration and improved fuel efficiency. During more aggressive input, a higher rpm is held, maximizing engine torque and power. During inconsistent throttle input, transient detection logic prevents multiple up- and downshifts. When descents are detected, the transmission downshifts to provide true engine braking.
  • Changing modes on the fly immediately alters the character of the machine, from quiet and relaxed to exciting and powerful.
  • Even in automatic mode, the driver can override the gear selection at any time by using the paddle shifters. The selected gear will be maintained for several seconds before the transmission seamlessly reverts to fully automatic shifting.
  • The low-range sub-transmission has a 1.42:1 ratio (like a 4WD truck), essentially doubling the number of gears from six to twelve.

The Business of SxSPowersports’ strongest segment continues to grow

One might say that side-by-sides are the best-kept success-story secret in powersports, but while it’s still possible for these enjoyable products to be overlooked by some, their incredible sales numbers are rapidly reducing the ranks of the uninitiated. Simply put, SxS is the fastest-growing category in powersports, and as these customers have demanded more performance and capability from their vehicles, the flagship multipurpose has become the fastest-growing segment, at close to 100,000 per year. To meet the needs and expectations of Honda customers, Honda developed the Pioneer 1000, which is among the company’s most important powersports products of the last decade.

But exactly what is a flagship multipurpose side-by-side? Among these vehicles’ typical traits are large-displacement (+800cc) multi-cylinder engines, comfortable suspension, sophisticated 4WD systems, big hauling and towing capacity and exceptional capability in both recreation and work applications. As for who’s buying them, side-by-side customers in general are becoming increasingly difficult to pigeonhole, but buyers of flagship multipurpose side-by-sides tend to be experienced powersports customers who want the biggest and best—folks who are looking for both a balance of recreation and work capability and a top-of-the-line product that can go anywhere and haul anything. These owners get extreme usage out of their vehicles.

While the Pioneer 1000 is new, the road that led to it is long. The company was at the forefront of the ATV market in 1970, when it offered the three-wheel US90 (later to be called the ATC90), and its ATV lineup now includes a full spectrum of four-wheel vehicles, from the sporty TRX family to the versatile Rincon, Rubicon, Foreman, Rancher and Recon lines. From 1977 to ’89, Honda sold a four-wheel powersports vehicle called the Odyssey, and although that model did have a roll cage, it was just a single-seater; Honda’s first true side-by-side was the utility-focused Big Red, introduced for 2009. Big Red was replaced by the 2014 model-year Pioneer 700—a midsize multipurpose model that’s available in two-person and four-person configurations. The following year, Honda added the two-person Pioneer 500, an entry-level side-by-side whose narrow stance allows it to drive on tight trails and fit in the bed of a pickup truck.

Now, Honda rounds out its Pioneer family with the Pioneer 1000, a no-compromise flagship multipurpose side-by-side. Like all Honda SxS vehicles, the Pioneer 1000 is produced at the Honda of South Carolina plant using domestic and globally sourced parts. The plant even added a new assembly line to handle capacity for this model.

In the chart below you will see the different features / options available on all of the different 2016 Pioneer 1000 models split between the Pioneer 1000 / Pioneer 1000 EPS / Pioneer 1000-5 / Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe. As you can see not all of them get certain features like the manual shift transmission with Sport Mode, Tilt Steering Wheel, Electric Power Steering, LED Headlights etc for the 2016 Pioneer 1000 & 1000-5. I have had some people confused on what options go to which model so hopefully this chart below will be of some help.

Trim Levels: To start with, the model is available in four different versions, two with a three-person configuration and two with a five-person capability.

QuickFlip: Customers who opt for a five-person model can quickly convert the rear seats into a cargo bed via the easy-to-use QuickFlip feature (exclusive to Honda). This feature has also been referred to as convertible seating in the past by Honda, when originally released on the Pioneer 700-4.

Self-Leveling Suspension: When the Pioneer 1000-5 EPS or Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe are loaded with rear passengers or cargo, their rear suspension uses a series of hydraulic chambers that automatically adjust to the correct ride height—no more compromising between a low-riding rear end when loaded or a too-stiff ride with a light load. This feature is also available as an accessory for the Pioneer 1000 and 1000 EPS.

DCT: The Pioneer 1000’s six-speed dual-clutch transmission has many advantages, but among the most attractive is its multiple modes. Depending on driver preference or the conditions encountered, the DCT on EPS models can be switched between two fully automatic modes (Standard and Sport), or Manual paddle-shift. In Automatic, the Advanced Transmission Logic senses the driver’s style and adapts, upshifting earlier when input is relaxed and holding gears longer for sportier driving. The system even detects descents and provides real engine braking.

Sub-Transmission: For situations that call for maximum torque (like difficult terrain or towing heavy loads), drivers can reduce the gear ratio by 42 percent, essentially doubling the number of gears from six to 12.

Drive Modes: With a shift of a single lever, drivers can change the Pioneer 1000’s drive mode. Of course there’s 2WD for normal terrain and 4WD for more challenging going. In addition, front and rear differentials can be locked for when maximum power is needed at all four wheels. Finally, Turf Mode unlocks both differentials to protect sensitive surfaces.

Tilt Steering: Standard on Pioneer 1000 types with EPS, the tilt steering wheel adjusts very far forward to allow easy entry and exit for drivers of all sizes.

Engineering Spotlight

The DCT DifferenceThere’s no shortage of areas where Honda has set new benchmarks with the Pioneer 1000, but perhaps the most pertinent is the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), which makes its first appearance ever on a side-by-side. Enthusiasts of high-performance sports cars are familiar with DCT technology, but until now, it wasn’t available to SxS customers.

What is DCT?A superior technology, DCT is an all-gear transmission that shifts automatically—the best of both worlds!

  • As the name suggests, Dual Clutch Transmissions have two clutches—one that controls odd-numbered gear sets (first, third, fifth), and another that controls even-numbered gear sets (second, fourth, sixth). A hollow outer transmission shaft contains a separate internal shaft, and each holds one of the two clutches.
  • Multiple gears are engaged simultaneously so that the transmission is constantly prepared for the next shift. For gear-changes, one clutch disengages and the other engages, resulting in shifts that are quick, smooth, seamless.
  • Data, collected by a series of sensors, is processed by the ECU, which uses an advanced algorithm to determine when the shift-control motor should electronically trigger gear-changes. The clutches are controlled by sophisticated electronics and hydraulics.
  • Honda is the powersports leader in DCT, having debuted it on the 2010 VFR1200F and since adapted, refined and expanded it to other motorcycles and premium ATVs.

Why DCT?The short answer is simple—because it’s better—but there’s obviously more to it than that, as DCT offers a long list of advantages:

  • Durability: All-gear designs (with no belts) provide a direct, connected feel between the accelerator and the wheels, as well as improved durability, reduced maintenance and efficient power transfer.
  • Versatility: Whereas most transmissions are either automatic or manual, DCT systems can give owners the option to choose depending on the driver and the conditions. For example, use standard automatic for relaxed cruising, sport mode to hold gears longer for more spirited driving, or manual to have fun shifting, like a sports car, or to allow precise speed control for operations like spraying and plowing.
  • Performance: While DCT is known for its ease of use, its smooth, quick gear-changes are also ideal for sportier applications—hence its availability on the new CRF1000L Africa Twin adventure-touring motorcycle, and even the next-generation Acura NSX sports car. Whereas a typical CVT design transmits 88% of power to the ground, all-gear systems deliver 96-98%. DCT allows maximum engine torque and true engine braking for the heaviest loads, hills and technical terrain.

Since establishing North Honda Motorsports in 1995, the Bellisle family—father Mike and sons Todd and Eric—have witnessed a steady growth in the Menominee, Michigan, dealership’s four-wheel sales, first with ATVs and more recently also with side-by-sides. Today, Todd estimates SxS vehicles alone are responsible for 50 percent of the shop’s business, with multipurpose vehicles comprising approximately 75 percent of that—and sales are continuing to grow. Keeping up with the demand and also putting on the occasional shop ride keeps the brothers busy, but we managed to corner Todd long enough to ask him what the Pioneer 1000 will mean to the Bellisles’ business.

How are your customers using Pioneer side-by-sides?Honestly, while they usually buy them for utility, I’d say they use them much more for recreation. We have a lot of everything in our area, so customers use their side-by-sides for hunting, fishing and just general recreational use like trail riding. I’d guess utility makes up about 20 percent of use, and that’s for things like working around the cabin and/or house—general work more than industrial use. We also sell a lot of snowplows and winches. Our customers are using their side-by-sides on a daily basis—five out of seven days a week, all year round, even with our winters.

What about the Pioneer 1000 do you find most appealing?It’s a total package—a premium machine. I’m big on fit and finish, and I really believe that’s what sets Honda apart. First impressions mean a whole lot, especially on a big purchase, where family is involved. For this particular unit, the displacement is important as well, because for this category, bigger is better—not so much the physical size, but engine displacement, just like the guy driving a big pick-up truck. So it’s great on paper, but it rides as good as it looks. I was fortunate to get a chance to drive a Pioneer 1000 early on, and that’s really the best way to appreciate it. Honda really hit the nail on the head with this one.

How do you see the Pioneer 1000 fitting into your dealership’s side-by-side lineup?The Pioneer 500 and 700 are great models, and we sell a ton of them—many to customers who are moving up from an ATV to a side-by-side. I think we’ll sell a lot of Pioneer 1000s to people who are transitioning up from those vehicles, as well as to customers who previously owned other brands of side-by-sides. In my mind, the Pioneer 1000 has got everything that this particular customer is looking for—the look, the performance, the options and modes and the capability—and then it backs that up when you actually drive it. There’s no reason why a customer wouldn’t consider it. I’m 100 percent confident we’ll sell every Pioneer 1000 that we get for 2016—the machine sells itself.

Designed to excel in off-road use, the viscous air-filter element does an excellent job of providing clean air to the engine under tough conditions. It flows air well for increased performance, and also provides a longer service interval.

Pioneer 1000 Drive Modes : Turf / 2WD / 4WD / Diff Lock

Total flexibility here, with one lever. Turf mode is perfect for sensitive surfaces (like grass fields) and provides easier steering. Rougher conditions demand four-wheel drive to maximize available traction. And when the trail becomes even more demanding front and rear differential locks drives direct power to all four wheels.

Paddle Shifting

You can let the Pioneer 1000 shift automatically, but if you want to choose a specific gear, upshift or downshift yourself in demanding conditions and even override the automatic gear selection—all without ever moving your hands from the wheel. Рынок SSV плотно оккупирован продукцией BRP, Polaris, Yamaha. А Вы знаете, что существуют сайды с автоматической коробкой передач?

Да, практически автомобильная шести ступенчатая автоматическая коробка передач. Нет ремня, нет вариатора, нет монотонного высокого звука двигателя на всех режимах. Давайте знакомиться с Honda Pioneer 1000.

Немного истории.

В 2014 г. Honda выпустил Pioneer 700, который занял особое место на рынке того времени. Модель имела хорошие характеристики и уверенно «держала» дорогу. Впрочем, это до сих пор сильная модель. Время шло, конкуренты Polaris и Kawasaki выпустили ответные продукты. И тут Honda, собрав весь свой накопленный опыт, выпускает новинку, способную «обрушить» современный рынок. Причём не только обрушить, но и перейти на следующий уровень! Новая модель легко конкурирует с BRP Commander и Defender, Polaris Ranger и General, а по некоторым параметрам превосходит. Например сравним размеры "маршруток" от Polaris и BRP:

Внешний вид модели выглядит более отточенным, исправлена ошибка, когда цветовая гамма двери не соответствовала боковым панелям. Дверные ручки расположены очень удобно — на картах, поэтому лишний раз не испачкаешь грязью. Модели Deluxe и Limited Edition (LE) оснащены светодиодными фарами и фонарями, 14 дюймовыми колесными дисками и 27 шинами.

Забравшись в водительское сиденье, чувствуешь перемены — оно немного приподнято и выдвинуто вперёд. Обзор явно улучшен. Ноги и нижняя часть тела пассажиров стали лучше защищены, что важно! Сиденья удобно складываются, предлагая большое пространство для багажа под ними.

Создавая новинку, Honda поставила в модель совершенно новый мотор с максимальными характеристиками среди собственного модельного ряда. Двигатель — четырехтактный с двумя цилиндрами и инжекторным впрыском с электронным управлением. Объем — 999 см3. Мощность 72 л/с. Двигатель смещён от центра шасси, что снижает сопротивление на трение, за счет оптимального выхода карданных валов из трансмиссии.

И да, о трансмиссии! Это отдельная тема! Pioneer 1000 предлагает полностью автоматическую трансмиссию с 6 скоростями и двойным сцеплением (DCT). Переключение происходит без разрыва передачи крутящего момента. Модель LE дополнительно оснащена системой I-4WD, которая запоминает манеру вождения и подстраивается под водителя.

Запускаем двигатель. Звук мотора тихий и «гладкий», два цилиндра и литровый объем радикально отличаются от привычного всем тарахтенья семисоток. Коробка передач работает плавно, создавая иллюзию движения на обычном автомобиле с автоматической коробкой передач. Управляет переключением передач отдельный процессор. Электроника постоянно отслеживает стиль и манеру езды водителя и предлагает наиболее эффективные режимы передач, снижая расход топлива. Имеется три режима трансмиссии DCT: полный автомат, спортивный и ручной. Первый — классический автомат, второй — электроника позволяет двигателю крутиться до более высоких оборотов на каждой из передач, третий — ручной режим. В ручном режиме переключение передач производится под рулевыми лепестками! Режимы трансмиссии выбираются отдельным рычагом. Доступны следующие режимы: TURF - 2WD - 4WD - 4WD Diff Lock c полной блокировкой. Система Hill-Start-Assist поможет начать движение на уклоне. Можно смело останавливаться на крутом подъеме, активировать систему, нажав педаль тормоза сильнее обычного, после чего перенести ногу на педаль газа и начать движение без скатывания назад.  В движении по сухому грунту машина устойчива, не скользит и не имеет склонности к сваливанию, едет по трассе вполне уверенно. По тяжелой грязи Honda Pioneer 1000 едет примерно также, как и одноклассники из BRP и Polaris, при этом нет риска поджечь или порвать ремень. При использовании коробки передач в ручном режиме, в совокупности с пониженной передачей, достигается очень плавное троганье с места даже в самых тяжелых условиях. Двигаясь в любом режиме АКПП всегда можно воспользоваться под рулевыми переключателями и установить нужную передачу. Колесные арки и запас прочности Honda позволяют установить 30 колеса с самым серьезным протектором и смело штурмовать любые участки.

Грузоподъёмность кузова составляет внушительные 450 кг., машина легко буксирует груз до 900 кг.

Новая модель предлагается в следующих основных модификациях: Honda Pioneer 1000 и 1000-5. Первая — это трёхместная модель, вторая — пятиместная с задними дверьми распашного типа и двумя дополнительными местами, раскладывающимися из пола кузова. Кузов обеих модификаций поднимается, открывая доступ к двигателю и другим узлам. Все места, включая откидные в кузове, оборудованы ремнями безопасности. Пятиместные модели оснащены системой поддержания постоянного уровня подвески вне зависимости от загрузки.

2016 Honda Pioneer 1000-5, Honda Side by Side

Honda's new flagship Pioneer has everything you'll need in a multi-purpose UTV. The 2016 Honda Pioneer 1000's stout chassis can tote 1000 pounds of cargo and tow up to 2000 pounds thanks to it's 999cc powerplant and the industry's first fully automatic, six-speed, dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The fit and finish is remarkable, and features such as self-leveling suspension, QuickFlip rear seating, tilt steering wheel, Electronic Power Steering (EPS), paddle shifters and sport mode, as well as a locking front differential and turf mode make the Honda Pioneer 1000-5 a front-runner in the UTV Industry's largest segment. We'll soon provide a detailed UTV Comparison with the Can-Am, Kawasaki, Polaris and Yamaha competitors, but after a few heavy-mileage test days, it's clear that Honda is beginning to flex it's muscles in the world of UTVs.

While the Pioneer 1000 is new, the road that led to it is long. Honda has been at the forefront of the ATV market since 1970, when it offered the three-wheel US90 (later to be called the ATC90), and its ATV lineup now includes a full spectrum of four-wheel vehicles, from the sporty TRX family to the versatile Rincon, Rubicon, Foreman, Rancher and Recon lines. From 1977 to ’89, Honda sold a four-wheel powersports vehicle called the Odyssey, and although that model did have a roll cage, it was just a single-seater; Honda’s first true side-by-side was the utility-focused Big Red, introduced for 2009. Big Red was replaced by the 2014 model-year Pioneer 700—a midsize multipurpose model that’s available in two-person and four-person configurations. The following year, Honda added the two-person Pioneer 500, an entry-level side-by-side whose narrow stance allows it to drive on tight trails and fit in the bed of a pickup truck. Now, Honda rounds out its Pioneer family with the 2016 Pioneer 1000.

Unicam Powerplant & 6-Speed Dual Clutch Transmission

The 2016 Honda Pioneer 1000-5 features a 999c liquid-­cooled OHC Unicam parallel-­twin four‐stroke powerplant. This is Honda's largest UTV mill to date, and only matched by Can-Am's new Defender 1000 UTV. The Longitudinal engine mounting eliminates unnecessary right angles in the driveline, and the engine and exhaust system are rubber-mounted to reduce vibration and noise. It's one of the more peaceful rides available. Despite it's quiet ride, it's big power and torque can pull over a ton of cargo!

The side-by-side market’s first fully Automatic Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) is a six-speed automatic. This all-gear, no belt, system is similar to the one found in the Acura NSX sports car. It provides a direct, connected feel between the accelerator and the wheels. It's more durable than the belt-driven CVTs, found on competitive models, and offers more efficient power transfer for maximum engine torque and true engine braking. As the name suggests, Dual Clutch Transmissions have two clutches—one that controls odd-numbered gear sets (first, third, fifth), and another that controls even-numbered gear sets (second, fourth, sixth). A hollow outer transmission shaft contains a separate internal shaft, and each holds one of the two clutches. Multiple gears are engaged simultaneously so that the transmission is constantly prepared for the next shift. For gear-changes, one clutch disengages and the other engages, resulting in shifts that are quick, smooth, seamless. Data, collected by a series of sensors, is processed by the ECU, which uses an advanced algorithm to determine when the shift-control motor should electronically trigger gear-changes. The clutches are controlled by sophisticated electronics and hydraulics.

The Honda Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe model, we tested, can be switched between two fully automatic modes (Standard and Sport), or Manual paddle-shift. In Automatic, the Advanced Transmission Logic senses the driver’s style and adapts, upshifting earlier when input is relaxed and holding gears longer for sportier driving. The system even detects descents and provides real engine braking. Even in automatic mode, the driver can override the gear selection at any time by using the paddle shifters. The selected gear will be maintained for several seconds before the transmission seamlessly reverts to fully automatic shifting. Sport mode can be switched on the fly, which immediately alters the character of the machine, from quiet and relaxed to exciting and powerful. While in difficult terrain or towing heavy loads, the Pioneer's low-range sub-transmission has a 1.42:1 ratio (like a 4WD truck), which will reduce the gear ratio by 42 percent, essentially doubling the number of gears from six to 12.

The Honda Pioneer 1000's multiple drive-system modes enable correct driveline selection for almost any situation: 2WD (locked rear differential), 4WD (locked rear/limited-slip front differential), Differential Lock (locked rear/locked front to maximize available traction), Turf Mode (2WD with limited-slip rear differential, to protect lawn or crops).

Stout & Versatile Chassis

Like the engine, the 2016 Honda Pioneer 1000’s chassis is incredibly stout. It rides on a fully independent suspension front and rear, and it's double A-arm design offers 10.5 inches of travel up front, 10.0 inches in back and has 12.4 inches of ground clearance (12.9 inches on the 3-seater). Standard on the five-person models (and available as an accessory for the three-person models) is a self-leveling rear suspension system, which automatically maintains the appropriate ride height when fully loaded. Even at full loads, the Pioneer 1000 remained comfortable and handled great.

Honda's flagship UTV offers one of the more comfortable and versatile cockpits in the industry. Up front is a wide, comfortable bench seat for one, two or three passengers, with hand-hold straps and a shoulder belt for the center passenger. The center seat is also positioned high and forward so you're not bumping legs and shoulders with the other occupants. The rear of the Pioneer 1000-5 features seating for two, with Honda’s exclusive QuickFlip convertible rear seats. It only takes a few seconds, and no tools, to convert the passenger seats to cargo space. The easy-to-use dump-bed lever can be accessed from outside the vehicle or from a front seated position. Hard doors with nets are found on all models, providing passengers with a secure feel and helping to keep mud and debris out of the rider cabin.

Ergonomics are great. The large, transmission and drive levers are easy-to-reach and identify. The tilt steering, found on all EPS models, allows you to manually position the steering wheel. The 2016 Honda Pioneer 1000 EPS and both 5-person models also come with Electric Power Steering system (EPS) that reacts to both vehicle speed and steering input, delivering precise driving feedback while also reducing steering effort. This is true even with the front differential locked, as kickback at the steering wheel is nearly eliminated in technical terrain.

The LCD multifunction display has a large, easy-to-read screen, showing speed, odometer, trip A and B, tachometer, gear selected, transmission mode, drive mode, clock, fuel, water temperature, mode and maintenance reminder. Two open dash-storage areas and a weatherproof glove box.
