Honda Amaze Review by Expert

The Japan based Honda Motor Company is unleashed their first diesel powered sedan christened as--HONDA AMAZE--in India. The sedan that was earlier codenamed as Honda 2TP is based on the existing Honda Brio platform alongside it also falls in the 4.5 meter cadre, which means apart from being inaugural diesel motorized sedan it also is Honda’s first compact sedan. The Honda Amaze has been presented in choice of petrol as well diesel variants, both tuned well deliver some really overwhelming fuel efficiency numbers to tempt the mileage freaks in the country.

The Honda Amaze is the company’s new entry level sedan, and at this point the said space is occupied by famous Honda City sedan. Though there is no official date announced by the leading auto firm for the launch of Honda Amaze compact sedan, and now it is has hited the showrooms.

The exteriors appears compact in shape with several smooth and sleek cues flowing throughout the body making it look elegant in every aspect for the spectators. The front sees a bigger fascia and bonnet line than the existing Brio hatch on which it is built. There is a large honey comb grille with broad chrome slat with company badge taking the centre stage. The Honda Amaze sedan has a wider air dam against the small looking Brio’s; moreover the body colored front bumpers house the spherical fog lamps at respective corners. The side profile sees blacked out A, B and C pillar just as seen in the ongoing Maruti Swift Dzire. The rear slapped boot won’t look deprived like in Tata Indigo CS, but elegant as seen in Honda City.

As per the company, the interiors are spacious despite of the fact that Honda Amaze is a compact sedan. The cabin is able to absorb as many as 5 passengers comfortably. Quality fabric material founds inside the cabin that ensures comfort to the occupants together with apt legroom and knee room at rear. Moreover at the front there is lustrous dashboard, while under high volume glove box. At the centre console there is 2-DIN music system that plays CD/Radio along with connectivity of Bluetooth and support of USB and AUX.

The instrument console features tachometer, large speedometer, low fuel indicator and many other amenities for the driver. There is numerous handy and convenient features that includes adjustable driver seat, leather wrapped steering with mounted controls, power windows, electric power steering, AC with climate control together with many more.

The petrol version is powered by the time and tested 1.2L, I-VTEC engine that at present powers Honda Brio hatchback. This engine will generate anything above 88 PS and peak torque of around 109 Nm. Furthermore, Honda Amaze diesel trim will see the newly developed 1.5L I-DTEC powertrain that will not only ensure excellent performance, but also ideal drivability along with some fantastic mileage figure of 24 kmpl.

Honda Amaze Rivals

The launch of Honda Amaze is a tactical one targeting specifically mass-segment sedan section. And in the same too, it challenges under 4-meter the most, like the Maruti Swift Dzire and Tata Indigo eCS. Being a premium car maker, the Brio-based sedan has got fantastic exterior design that has trendiness oozing-out same as little sibling Brio hatch. On this front, sporty looking Swift Dzire and simple standing Indigo eCS seems at bay. In the inside, as per the reports from Thailand, there is loads of space that can easily accommodate 5 occupants without cramped rear seat. Nonetheless, Thai auto market has witnessed full-size Amaze and not sub-4-meter, but still as per experts, it will carry large area against squeezed-up in ongoing models.

On the feature part, it is definitely worth watching especially a good contest will be with Dzire that is said to have more value for money features inside the cabin. On the mileage aspect both Dzire and Indigo will ensure troubled times to Honda Amaze specifically in the diesel department; however, Honda is prepared for this, as its 1.5L i-DTEC delivers 25.8 kmpl alongside retuned petrol powertrain. Moreover, to take over the driver’s seat Honda has also launched AT incorporated variant as well.

Honda Amaze Mileage and Fuel Efficiency

And to climb the success ladder with brisk ‘mileage’ is one of the trump cards, among many, on which Japan-based automaker will be banking. So both the launched models of Honda Amaze sedan i.e. Honda Amaze diesel and petrol giving out promising fuel efficient numbers.

As per experts from the industry, the 1.5L i-DTEC diesel engine of Honda Amaze that smokes out about 100 PS and a powerful torque of 200 Nm is tweaked enough to provide a huge 25.8 kmpl of certified mileage, while in city conditions it is around 22.5  kmpl.

Honda Amaze Engine, Power and Performance

Honda Amaze sedan carries much of significance for the company when it comes to the performance and powertrain. From the very beginning, since the waves of Honda Brio based sedan wooed, it was speculated that it will be available with the same ‘existing’ Brio engine, however later the confidentiality of diesel engine was unveiled. The 1.2L, 1198cc displacement, i-VTEC engine powers the petrol-run version of Honda Amaze sedan. With this engine it is give outs fine 88 PS of maximum power along with top notch torque of 109 Nm and relative rev per minutes. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

Furthermore, the mouth-watering diesel engine, which is the outcome of prolonged R&D in the form of ‘Earth Dream Technology’ delivers impressive refinement alongside lively performance. The 1.5L i-DTEC diesel engine that is manufactured in Honda’s Rajasthan facility generates astonishing 100 PS of sheer power and an upright torque of 200 Nm. Likewise, petrol variant the Honda Amaze Diesel engine is also coupled with a smooth 5-speed manual gearbox.

Honda Amaze Pickup and Acceleration

The Honda Amaze sedan with its refined powertrains and swift acceleration is certainly catch the eye of Indian car buyers. As of now, the already tested 1.2L petrol engine is performing its duties very well under Honda Brio hatchback. Here some more retuning of power and acceleration is required to add that exclusivity in Honda Amaze. While diesel variant of Honda Amaze surely sets the established players of the segment packing.

For the 1.2L petrol version the expected maximum power is of 88 PS at 6000 rpm, while the top notch torque is 109 Nm at 4500 rpm. With these promising numbers it is able enough to zoom from naught to 100 kph in only 15 seconds approx. Furthermore the top speed of around 160 kmph. On the other side, it’s the lately developed 1.5L i-DTEC diesel motor that out pours estimated 100 PS of peak power alongside relative high end torque of 200 Nm. This decent extraction of power and torque assist Honda Amaze acceleration covers the 0-100 kph mark in close by 17 seconds, together with top speed of 170 kmph.

Honda Amaze Exteriors and Features

As we all know that Honda has blazinged towards the 4.5 meter in India, and hence its benchmark or say entire focus is to dethrone Maruti Swift Dzire. To catch up that dream Japanese company has worked extensively for years and less than 4.5 meter Honda Amaze is an outcome of the same. The design and dimensions of Amaze sedan are neither undersized like Tata Indigo CS nor messy-looking like Maruti Swift Dzire, but they are graceful and outstanding in every manner.

At the front of Honda Amaze exteriors, you see a hint of Skoda Rapid and Honda City especially the grille and headlamps. The bonnet is kept sharp with minimal lines flowing towards the grille of Honda Amaze that has two chrome slats resembling a water fall design and amid is the big ‘Honda’ emblem taking the center stage. The headlamps with integrated turn indicators are nearly same, or say some mm larger, when compared against younger sibling, Honda Brio hatchback. The impressive smooth front bumper along with very cleverly sculpted air dam speaks about the concentration of Honda design engineers. The sides of Honda Amaze truly sets you in motion with the aerodynamic design and visible wind styling cues, resembling a bit of Fluidic philosophy. The blackened A and B pillars alongside body colored ORVMs make the side-pose really stirring. Moreover, another reason to delight are slightly pronounced wheel arches that hold chunky alloys giving out a sport appeal to Honda Amaze.

The rear is something to watch out for, and that is finish levels. The bumper and the boot lid are styled up to the mark following a style statement within. Though the Honda Amaze tail lamp cluster, would provide you with a hint of older version of City, but is done very neatly leaving no room for error also there is marvelous chrome slat just above the license plate of Honda Amaze. Furthermore, there is high mounted stop lamp and sleek roof antenna at the top completing the things sophisticatedly.

Honda Amaze Interiors and Features

Besides, premium looking and intelligently designed exteriors, now at your service will be astonishing and well-balanced interiors of Honda Amaze sedan. The interiors expected to be well spiced up and generous, though one cannot expect this airiness, while gazing at the compact exteriors from outside. The rear row, as per reports from Thailand, is capable to seat three, all thanks to very-low central tunnel, which is such an awesome thing, making life so easy at the back. Here good head room and better leg room is assured, against cramped in arch rival Maruti Swift Dzire sedan. Nevertheless, as per industry experts, the India specific under 4-meter Honda Amaze will also share similar space, but will compromise a bit when it comes to boot space. The seats are cozy with large centre arm-rest and courteously reclined.

On the front part the cabin is bound to borrow things from Honda Brio, and it does, the elegance at dashboard looks very familiar. Whereas the plastic used at the central console and glove box is acceptable, considering the low-cost mass segment vehicle Honda Amaze. The front seats are projected to remain same as seen in the sibling offering sensible comfort to the driver and co passenger, while there are chances of 2/4-way adjustable driver’s seat. Also the chrome accentuated 3-spoke steering wheel with leather wrapped gear shift knob will add to the premiumness to the dual tone Honda Amaze interiors.

The entertainment aspect taken care by 2-DIN music system that has USB and AUX feature, think Bluetooth it is fantastic. There is 2 speakers at the back with 2 tweeters upfront, moreover the steering mount audio controls makes simple things look blissful inside the cabin of Honda Amaze. Convenient features include rear defogger, modern AC with heater, tachometer, outside temperature display, front power windows and power steering along with tilt adjust steering. Moreover, aspects like folding/ 60:40 split rear seats, coin-cup-bottle holder and back pocket magazine holder etc. are a part of long list of storage spaces.

Safety Features in Honda Amaze

The safety has always received top priority with the Japanese car maker Honda, and with prestigious compact sedan Honda Amaze there won’t be any exception. There is adequate safety equipments in Honda Amaze to protect the driver and occupant at the time of any mishap. First of all it is the G-CON technology that is ready to absorb any collision impact with its very well built quality. Moreover there are dual i-SRS airbags expected for the driver and co-passenger to guard them from banging their head.

Furthermore, there will be Antilock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) that is expected to be kept standard across all the variants in the Honda Amaze sedan lineup. Also, to ensure maximum safety at rear there are belts for all occupants with 3-point ELR system and pretensioners, high mounted stop lamp at rear windscreen and active head restraints.

Honda Amaze Driving and Handling

As the name goes, Amaze, it is definitely amaze us with its well versed capabilities in the driving and handling department as City, Jazz and Brio has been doing till date. The best part with the drivability will be the tested 1.2L petrol engine that rests under the hood of Honda Brio. But interesting is the newbie 1.5L diesel IDTEC, it is way premature to say anything at this point, albeit it is very capable.

The diesel and petrol motors is tweaked for better results in the city stop-go traffic alongside decent road plantation at higher speeds on the highways. The refinement, the electric tilt-adjustable power steering and minimal turning radius cames very handy while driving. The outcome of ‘Earth Dream Technology’ project i.e. i-DTEC powertrain, and the engineering expertise of Honda together will take diesel competition to next levels the compact sedan segment.

Honda Amaze Conclusion

The launch of Honda Amaze sedan in India is another class leading effort by Honda, as after decades of refined petrol powertrains, it’s time to taste diesel from Japanese engineering. The unearthing of ‘i-DTEC’ diesel motor came with ‘Earth Dreams Technology’ project that took couple of laborious years by mechanical engineers of Japan. The diesel engine definitely promises fine-tuning alongside swift drivability across city drives.

Moreover, with its under 4 meter dimensions Honda Amaze sedan offers more space and practicality against competitors Maruti Swift Dzire and Tata Indigo CS. Here, the car buyers won’t expect Honda to do a Toyota that came with a premium badge and offered shoddy material in the form of Toyota Etios series. Though the looks, the dimensions and stance is very upright and ideal, as seen in Thailand launch, the only matter of concern will be mileage and space inside the India-bound Honda Amaze. Nevertheless, if petrol 1.2L i-VTEC yields out the exiting economy numbers of Honda Brio hatch i.e. 18 kmpl it is more than enough. However, if the gossipmongers in the industry are to be believed, the Honda Amaze diesel mileage is as good as 25.8 kmpl, if this comes true, it surpasses diesel-mileage-king Maruti Dzire in a jiffy, setting up a new benchmark on cloud nine.

Honda Amaze

The face is familiar to the market adjoining to Brio, but still changed are noticed in grill and bumper profile

                                SO GOOD                                     NO GOOD

. Cabin Space                              . Engine noise

. Powerful Engine                     . Clumsy Interiors

Worldwide renowned car manufacturers HONDA sales figure has gone minimizing in India, foremost reason behind it was lack of diesel engine. So the much awaited Amaze has finally been introduced to Indian roads been masked in a power pack 1.5L i-Dtec diesel engine which promises a segment leading mileage of 25.8 kmpl and generates a power of 100 ps.

First when the prototype of Amaze was revealed in Japan. Many of analyst guessed that the market car when launched will be build to a cost and will arrive refined in India. But Honda did not took a step forward and failed to stand on our expectations in terms of interior quality and much audible engine growls inside the cabin which are even more intrusive when revved hard . Well, lets reveal the package Honda has designed with a new diesel heart keeping the sub-four meter criteria in conscious to avail cost benefits.

Dual chrome grill differentiate it from Brio.

Side profile of amaze depicts its sedan characters. Clean

line detailing done which merge with the tail lamp.

Appearance (Exterior & Interior)

Side bumper profile has clean bend and the headlamp

cluster gets black element to enhance sporty feel.

At first glance thrown on the Amaze definitely not gives that amazing figure as again we will notice the same thing what Maruti did with the Dzire. It recognizes us of the similar Brio but just when headed towards the side profile we get to notice the profile lining starting from the rear door and compiling to the boot finally being merged with the tail lamps and here we come to know that its Amaze. With just tad changes  in the front profile like the dual front chrome grill and the fog lamps (on the top notch). In the side profile the turn indicators on ORVMs (on the top notch) and the added boot which tells us that its a sedan draws attention and what we also notice here is the spot fair 165mm ground clearance. But further going to the back, this rear profile becomes quite apparent as this is the added section.Though the boot seems slated to get axed but the layout here is well executed and Honda mesmerize us with the 400Lt. boot space that helps us to gain  access  to a good space for luggage. Even the sharp edgy tail lamps and the chrome detail lining bolstered at the rear profile with the Honda badging positioned just over it with a wide bumper really works out.

Amaze rear profile gives a broad sense. Chrome detailing

and sharp tail lamps works and are well executed.

Dash layout a carry over from Brio and Fit & Finish is just

average. Chrome ringed A/C vents appeals. Interior quality

seems flimsy and obsolete.

Now the area where Honda this time disappointed us are its interiors which are just not built to the cost. It seems that Honda in a hurry to hurdle its way in the segment came with Amaze with less refinement. We get just average quality interiors with lame fit & finish which are just carried forward from the Brio and the rubber used for the cabin insulation are hard which leads to much vibrations and allows engine growls to de-focus driving. But dual tone colour theme of beige and black with chocolate colour element thrown over the instrumental cluster, central console and door armrests and a little cinch of chrome ring on the A/C vents appeals. The top notch also gets dual tone seat fabric. Well, hope forward to see a more solid built cabin in the face lifts and updates of Amaze in future. Lets hope to get plush interiors in Amaze from Honda in future.

Overall Amaze gives an eye-soothing image with it looks with less dynamism, bold attributes and tickle of chrome in both exterior and interior. Referring to interiors quality and fit & finish, Honda needs to accentuate to get it well bolstered as now it lacks below our expectations and criteria.

Glove box sufficiently big to hold small bulk.

Comfort & Utility

Intrusive utility space in central console and door pockets.

USP for Amaze. Decent legroom & headroom with good

under thigh support adds to the boon. Square glass holders

in the center armrest at rear.

Honda again has taken flagship in the area of cabin space. We get a very decent legroom and headroom with adequate under thigh support on the rear seat which makes it comfortable to its rivals though the front seats lacks lumber support and even the cushioning is tad hard. So this section of Amaze comes all down with improvement offering decent cabin space for both front and the rear passengers thanks to the 10 mm extended wheelbase than the Brio compiling with ample boot space too. Even when we talk in terms of utility space, Honda has worked well here. The glove box is sufficiently large to hold small bulks and the central console has two cup holder right under the gear knob and a bottle holder just behind the hand brake lever, all four door gets separate bottle holders for passengers which are big enough to easily give access to a 1Lt. bottle. An unique pinch is the square shaped glass holders in the central armrest at rear seat, may Japanese like their liquor in square glasses! But still there are chances for improvement as the seats cushioning are tad hard and we would appreciate it if they provide us with the detachable headrests.

On the round, Honda makes its way through the cabin and boot space section which can be titled its USP with that sub-four meter tag which has assisted to keep the cost concentrated.

Performance, Ride & Handling Honda has not been much generous with its overall ride quality as there are some odd  proportions associated with it but definitely

100 PS generating engine is power-pack.
Honda has managed to get a lukewarm response for Amaze with an introduced power-pack diesel engine giving a class leading mileage of 25.8 km/l which Honda claims by minimizing the size of the cylinder bars for faster engine rotations.
165 mm ground clearance is spot fair for Indian roads.
14" tires keeps the car well planted  on roads.
The car performs well and the engine is powerful which can be felt when revved hard as it punches well over 1800 RPM. It does not delivers that explosive performance as it punch and pulls are average at lower RPM ratios but it grunts effectively and lack of power is not felt when revved hard, but here a fact remains in my concern is that loud engine noise which are excessively intrusive at higher revs and add to fatigue on long drives as it irritates the driver on the go. But that punch of 100 PS is quite apparent on hard accelerations. At lower gearshifts Amaze generates good torque but when shifted to higher numbers the torque converter to bhp takes a gap to gain energy and though the gearshifts need not to be much navigated but ends up being a bit notchy.  In the context of ride quality Honda still needs to go down to some serious improvements as the car ride is just not that pleasing due to over hard suspensions. The ride quality of the car is bumpy, on smooth roads suspensions are felt quite hard which gives the driver confidence but when we cross a speed breaker then the car goes tack over it and on the rough surfaces the ride actually becomes quite hassle and bumpy for the passengers. So Honda needs here to re-tune the suspensions to deliver a less bumpy and comfortable ride with good handling. Another pronouncing angle for Amaze is its handling. Amaze reckons you confidence even you are driving over 130 km/h as here its hard suspensions proves to be a boon for it as they help to keep the car planted on the road. The suspensions are very stiff around the corners even when accelerated hard which reduces body roll and the passengers do not hassle. Even the steering keeps you abreast as the wheel is correctly weighed up at high speeds and so while speeding you do not freeze your nerves and even to hurdle through the city traffic is very easy with 4.7m. turning radius. But the steering is not as peppy as swift or the Dzire which makes it slightly less adorable as at times specially on expressways you feel the steering tad hard while changing lanes. I think so swift sets benchmark in its segment with which Honda needs to compete. Here even what helps Honda is the 165 mm ground clearance and 2405 mm wheelbase (10 mm elongated) which delivers prominent handling compiled with safe crossing at massive speed breakers. Overall Honda in terms of handling manage to compete with its rivals by promising confidence when pushed hard and a tension free easy to drive sitting position. On a round up package, Amaze stand to be fair in context to Performance, Ride & Handling as the the engine does punch hard with its 100 PS energy and handling being its best angle. With beefed up suspension tuning and subtle enhancement leading to suppressed engine noise Honda can surely scroll up with it number of cars on road.
Driver gets three way adjustable seats (Height, Rake, Reach)

Honda has not left any corner in terms of features leading us to complain but at the same point certainly has not gone over generous mesmerizing us with any trappings rather than that of heat absorbing front windshield which makes it to stand out in its segment.

Amaze gets El. adjustable ORVMs on top end notches.

A/C as standard, Music system  gets USB connectivity andsteering mounted audio controls but lacks Bluetooth con.

In terms of features Amaze has similar attributes to that of Dzire or the Etios with no unique changes. The top notch of the car comes fully loaded which has all door power windows with driver's (with auto up-down), A/C with Heater, Rake, Reach & Height adjustable driver's seat, 2 din audio system with USB connectivity and four door speakers, heat absorbent front windshield, Dual tone seat fabric & Interior Power adjustable ORVMs with turn indicators, Keyless entry, front fog lamps, rear defogger, and alloy wheels. Honda has been also a little smart here by giving dual horns only at the top notch to cut down the cost. Other variants excluded little tweaks like turn indicators on ORVMs (base one is also manually adjustable),alloy wheels, heat absorbent front windshield. The bottom two variants also lacks seat height adjust, keyless entry rear center armrest, steering mounted audio controls, rear speakers and gets only 1 din externally fixed music system.  In safety context, Amaze gets front dual Airbags on the top notch and the second from above gets ABS & EBD. Honda plays a little kink here by delivering ABS & EBD as standard in all diesel variants. May be that is a trick on which Honda is betting to generate larger stats in sale of diesel avatar of Amaze.
Front windshield are heat absorbent
On the wrap Honda here in Amaze still needs to throw a little nip and as with current features and safety standards Amaze can compete with its rivals but is definitely not going to supersede the benchmark player as remember with all these features Dzire also offers us Climate Control on the top notch and has got little more knickknacks like dash integrated cup holders and also does well in terms of utility space and interiors. So Honda got to put bits of striking slats into the Amaze so the prospective customers gets a loaded list of features to scribble with lips spread. Verdict
Honda Amaze only sets benchmark in terms of cabin space and rear legroom in the sub four meter 3 box (sedan) segment

Here when it comes down to bench-marking the segment then Amaze has only one figure which is very much pronouncing, that is of its cabin space. Yes, I,ve earlier mentioned it as the USP of the car and again its the only striking out attribute which Amaze has. In this segment only Amaze delivers us such an elongated cabin with the sub four meter three box cabin (sedan) tag associated with it. Neither the Dzire or the Indigo CS has such good cabin space. So with that, for those a roomy cabin is the prime concern with soothing cost, here are there bet for which I can reckon.
