    Gauges & Indicators The gauges and indicators on your motorcycle keep you informed, alert you to possible problems, and make your riding safer and more enjoyable. Refer to the gauges and indicators frequently. Their functions are described on the following pages.

    Gauges & Indicators Lamp Check Most of the indicator lights come on when you turn the ignition switch ON so you can check that they are working. Some indicators turn off after a few seconds; other remain on until or after the engine is started. The ABS indicator remains on until your motorcycle begins moving.

    Gauges & Indicators speedometer Shows riding speed in miles (USA) or kilometers (Canada) per hour. tachometer Shows engine speed in revolutions per minute (rpm). tachometer red zone Shows excessive engine rpm range (indicated from the beginning of the tachometer red zone) in which operation may damage the engine.     Controls & Features Ignition Switch LOCK The ignition switch is used for starting and stopping the engine (page ) and to lock the steering for theft prevention (page ). Insert the key and turn it to the right for the ON and ACC (accessory) positions. Push down on the key and turn it to the left to the LOCK (steering lock) position.

The starter motor will not operate if the engine stop switch is in the OFF position when the start/reverse button is pushed.

    Controls & Features Headlight Beam Adjustment Knob The adjustment knob is used to raise or lower the height of the headlight beam. You may need to adjust the headlight if you change to a lighter or heavier load than you normally carry on your motorcycle. If you carry a heavier or lighter than normal load, you may need to adjust your headlight beam so you can better see the road ahead and don’t blind oncoming drivers.

A helmet should fit your head comfortably and securely. A bright-colored helmet and reflective strips can make you more noticeable in traffic.

    Cargo Compartment Transmitter Care Avoid severe shock to the transmitter, such as dropping or throwing it. Also, protect it from extreme hot or cold temperatures. Clean the transmitter case with a soft cloth. Do not use strong cleaners or solvents that could harm the case. Immersing the transmitter in any liquid will harm the transmitter and cause it to not function properly.

    Starting & Stopping the Engine Always follow the proper starting procedure described below. For your safety, avoid starting or operating the engine in an enclosed area such as a garage. Your motorcycle’s exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide gas which can collect rapidly in an enclosed area and cause illness or death. Your motorcycle can be started with the transmission in gear by pulling in the clutch lever before operating the starter.

    Starting & Stopping the Engine The low oil pressure indicator should go off a few seconds after the engine starts. If the indicator stays on, stop the engine immediately and check the engine oil level. Starting Procedure This motorcycle has a fuel-injected engine with an automatic fast idle. Follow the procedure indicated below.

    Starting & Stopping the Engine Bank Angle Sensor Ignition Cut-off System Your motorcycle’s banking (lean angle) sensor system is designed to automatically stop the engine and fuel pump if the motorcycle is overturned. Before restarting the engine, you must turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and then back to ON.

    Shifting Gears Your motorcycle has five forward gears in a one-down, four-up shift pattern which is coordinated with a hydraulically actuated clutch system.     Reverse Riding Your motorcycle’s reverse system allows you to back out of a parking position at slow speed. Make sure there are no obstacles or people in the area. Avoid steep or uneven surfaces. Carrying a passenger while reversing is not recommended because it makes balance and control more difficult to maintain.

    Reverse Riding Release the start/reverse button, and the motorcycle will stop. After your motorcycle is stopped, push the RVS switch to OFF.     Braking Your motorcycle is equipped with a Linked Braking System. Operating the front brake lever applies the front brake and a portion of the rear brake. Operating the rear brake pedal applies the rear brake and a portion of the front brake.     If a Fuse Blows All of the electrical circuits on your motorcycle have fuses to protect them from damage caused by excess current flow (short circuit or overload). If something electrical on your motorcycle stops working, the first thing you should check for is a blown fuse.

Наверное, догадались - речь пойдет о легендарном "Золотом Крыле", мотоцикле Honda Gold Wing.Honda Gold Wing называют шедевром конструкторской мысли и - шутя - половинкой автомобиля. Этот аппарат примечателен не только своими размерами и характеристиками, он породил новый разряд мотолюбителей - поклонников дальних путешествий на двух колесах в полном комфорте. Долгие годы "Крыло" оставалось флагманом японского мотостроения, выпускалось без каких-либо серьезных изменений и прекрасно раскупалось - при цене в $15.000. Лишь на пороге нового тысячелетия Honda решила обновить оперение "птички". А заодно иначинку...С чего все начиналось? В 1972 году в исследовательском центре Honda была собрана команда молодых конструкторов, которой было поручено разработать прототип "короля мотоциклов" - тяжелого байка с максимально возможным уровнем технических наворотов. Сказано - сделано: уже на следующий год появился прототип М1 с шестицилиндровым оппозитным двигателем жидкостного охлаждения рабочим объемом 1500 см куб. и мощностью... всего 61 л.с. Удивляться тут нечему, ведь ставилась задача построить машину для поклонников туризма, а не спорта.

    Естественно, что такая махина никоим образом не вписывалась в мотоциклетную моду того времени - самый крутой по тем временам Honda CB750 выглядел совсем иначе. О проекте не узнал бы никто, если бы не конкуренты. Когда Kawasaki выбросила на рынок модель Z1, которая на голову превосходила СВ750, Honda стала готовить ответный удар. Однако конструкторы не пошли по проторенному пути укрупнения двигателя прежней модели. Они использовали наработки проекта М1 (к сожалению, лишь частично). Для обеспечения хорошей управляемости двигатель укоротили, срезав два цилиндра, и форсировали. Уже осенью 1974 года новый супермотоцикл GL1000 появился на мотосалоне в Кельне. Тогда же публика впервые увидела на его борту надпись "Золотое Крыло".Новинка благодаря множеству примененных в ней технических решений наделала много шума: цилиндры оппозита по-автомобильному отлили заодно с картерными деталями, с тонкими чугунными гильзами, между которыми оставались проходы для охлаждающей жидкости. Да и сама система охлаждения была решена на автомобильный манер - с термостатом и вентилятором с электроприводом. Система питания - из той же оперы. Примечательно, что на GL1000 Honda впервые применила привод на заднее колесо карданным валом. Испытывали этот узел так: при скорости 50 км/ч включалась нейтраль, а затем первая передача - раз он способен выдюжить такое насилие, то кардану в ходе эксплуатации не страшны любые нагрузки.Что и говорить, мотоцикл получился фантастически быстроходным, крепким и комфортным. В его седле без усталости можно было проводить дни напролет. Но вот незадача: за год оказалось востребовано только пять тысяч машин. Спрашивается, почему? Очень просто: не сформировался еще класс мотоциклистов, который мог бы "Крыло" по достоинству оценить - любителей дальнобоя с комфортом.Время расставило точки над "I". Через пять лет (прежде чем Honda решилась обновить модель) руководитель проекта Gold Wing проехал тысячи миль по дорогам Америки. Цель: обсудить с местными байкерами достоинства и недостатки "Крыла". Тогда и выяснилось, что аппарат ценят вовсе не за "лошадей" под капотом, а за непревзойденную плавность работы мотора и фантастически низкий уровень шума. Кроме того, большинство владельцев дополнительно оснащали свои аппараты обтекателями, стеклами и багажниками (что, собственно, и определило в дальнейшем облик машины). Так путешествие "в народ" позволило Honda выполнить работу над ошибками: в 1980 году мотор "пополнел" до 1085 см куб., мощность повысилась в среднем диапазоне, усилили агрегаты трансмиссии, подвеска обогатилась пневматикой, и, главное, байк получил развитое пластиковое оснащение. В том же году мотоцикл перестал быть японским - его производство полностью перевели на новый завод в США.Процесс пошел: один за другим появлялись доработанные под требовательных к комфорту американцев люксовые варианты "Крыла". Модернизировались шасси, рама, двигатель (в 1984 году объем увеличили до 1182 см куб., появился впрыск топлива). Тогда же в стандартное оснащение машины вошли дорожный компьютер, саморегулирующаяся задняя пневматическая подвеска, круиз-контроль, интерком. Появилось и множество люксовых опций. Все эти усовершенствования позволили Honda не отставать от конкурентов. Но Honda хотела быть первой, а не одной из. Поэтому в середине 80-х руководство решило остановить "эволюцию" и вернуться к забытому было проекту М1 - шестицилиндровой схеме и объему 1520 см куб. Такого "горшка" не было ни у одного конкурента. И именно в силу этого обстоятельства проекту дали зеленый свет."Крылья" образца 1988 года ездят по дорогам мира и по сей день. За это время модель превратилась в культовый туристический мотоцикл. Только в Америке насчитывается более сотни клубов "голдвингистов", в Европе их около тридцати. Упоминание о мотоцикле можно найти в "Книге рекордов Гиннесса": финн Яри Саарелайнен проехал на Gold Wing за 752 дня 110 тыс. км. Мотоцикл оказался настолько хорошо сконструированным, что его эволюция замерла - вносимые изредка изменения проходили по разряду "косметических". Ни одна другая компания с тех пор так и не рискнула создать нечто подобное; более того, Suzuki и Yamaha вообще ушли с рынка больших туристов.

    Тем не менее Honda решила укрепить свои "дальнобойные" бастионы. В прошедшем в конце 2000 года мотосалоне в Мюнхене дебютировал принципиально новый, выполненный с чистого листа Gold Wing. Все накопленные за десять лет молчания мотоциклетные новшества компании нашли свое место в этом аппарате. Поднявшие голову конкуренты были поставлены на место. Такого шика мотомир еще не видывал!Судите сами: аппарат обзавелся легкой алюминиевой диагональной рамой. Причем за счет ее оригинальной формы удалось сдвинуть двигатель - а вслед за ним и водителя - вперед. Таким образом изменилась развесовка, что существенно улучшило управляемость машины. Двигатель (теперь это 1800-кубовый оппозит) жестко установлен в раму как один из ее силовых элементов. Размеры передней вилки приводят в трепет - на каком байке вы найдете 45-миллиметровые "телескопы" с картриджной начинкой! Подвеска заднего колеса - вообще хай-энд: консольное крепление колеса на маятнике, соединенном с рычажной системой Pro-Link для создания прогрессивной характеристики. Кроме того, карданный вал втиснут внутрь маятника и имеет резиновые втулки для плавности передачи крутящего момента.Новый двигатель хоть и подобен предшественнику (оппозитная шестерка с жидкостным охлаждением и двухклапанными головками цилиндров), но при возросшем рабочем объеме гораздо легче и уже. Шесть форсунок управляются единым электронным блоком системы зажигания, причем алгоритмы управления для каждого цилиндра индивидуальны. Воздушные заслонки срабатывают при запуске и в режимах холостого хода.Взгляните этой "птичке" в лицо. Не правда ли, россыпь галогенных фар в моноблоках на массивном округлом щите выглядит чертовски притягательно? А как вам остромодные поворотники на зеркалах заднего вида? Конструкторам удалось разработать внешность не только "нарядную", но и "аэродинамическую" - коэффициент сопротивления снижен на 10%! Да и на скорости, что тут говорить, округлые формы шумят гораздо меньше угловатых. С помощью сервопривода направление светового луча изменяется по высоте в пределах 2,5 градусов. Ветровое стекло тоже можно отрегулировать по высоте, но от сервопривода конструкторы отказались в пользу механики - она легче и надежнее. К услугам пилота качественная аудиосистема (с CD-чейнджером на шесть дисков) с автоматической регулировкой громкости в зависимости от скорости движения, круиз-контроль, а также отменная вентиляция: внутри обтекателя циркуляция воздуха организована так, что теплый воздух от радиатора на высоких скоростях омывает водителя, а на малых электровентиляторы отбрасывают жар за пределы кормы.Задняя часть мотоцикла выполнена в лучших американских традициях: массивный бампер, море стекла и не меньшее количество багажных емкостей (147 л). "Чемоданы" укомплектованы по самому высокому разряду - внутренняя подсветка, мягкая обивка и ручки для переноски. Вы еще не устали от перечисления достоинств? Вот вам еще - вдогонку: в ключ зажигания имплантирована защитная микросхема, а тормозные системы соединены в комбинированную схему. Ну а регулируемые рычаги тормоза и сцепления, автоматически отключающийся указатель поворота - это самые обычные опции для такого "лимузина".На радость "голдвингистам" компания предлагает колоссальный выбор аксессуаров: хромированные детали (кожухи глушителей, накладки на боковины, спецэмблемы, дефлекторы), динамики аудиосистемы, антенны, кофры и даже приборные панели. Но главное - как подтверждение надежности - новый Gold Wing получил трехлетнюю гарантию без ограничения пробега.В общем, прикупив Gold Wing 1800 GL, этот шедевр мототехнической мысли, можно надолго забыть о "двухколесной" туристической моде. Следующую модернизацию Honda, вероятно, проведет лет через десять.

Preset the torque on the left side swingarm fitting @ 14 ft./lbs. I marked the nut and used my socket to torque the lock ring to true 71# torque.
