2004 Honda Metropolitan

Intro

The Honda CHF50 scooter is known as the Metropolitan scooter in the United States, but it’s known by many different names around the world as well. Honda first began producing these types of scooters all the way back in the 1960s. Honda first introduced the Metropolitan scooter to the US in the year 2002. The MSRP for the 2004 Honda Metropolitan scooter is around $1,800. The scooter is slightly over 6.5 feet long and 24.6 inches wide.

The liquid-cooled four-stroke engine has a peak output of around four to five horsepower that propels the Metropolitan scooter to a speed of up to around 40 mph. The 2004 version of Honda’s Metropolitan II is limited to 25 mph. The Metropolitan II can even be classified as a moped in several states. The Honda Metropolitan scooters typically get between 80 and 100 mpg on regular gas. These Metropolitan scooters feature a spacious lockable compartment in the center, below that seat, that can fit a helmet and other personal items as well.

The scooter also features a handle to lock the stand from within the compartment and the handlebars are lockable as well. Both 2004 Honda Metropolitan scooters feature a one-piece nonadjustable vinyl seat that is made to only hold the driver. The frame of the scooter is made of aluminum and the body is made of plastic. The Metropolitan comes equipped with standard handle grips and handlebars as well. The 2004 version features a standard speedometer, temperature warning light and fuel level warning gauge on the dash.

Many riders prefer the 2004 Honda Metropolitan scooter over any other scooter currently available. Riders typically prefer the engine performance, reliability, low repair costs and better design of the 2004 Metropolitan scooters when compared to others out on the market. Riders also thought the 2004 Metro scooter was more fun, safer and a better deal for the money when compared to other options. Riders did indicate that other scooters have better off-road, racing track and touring capabilities than the 2004 Metropolitan scooter.

Most riders prefer other scooters or motorbikes when compared to the 2004 Honda Metropolitan II. Riders feel that other scooter and bikes have better engine performance and more fun than the 2004 Metropolitan II scooter. These riders also feel that other scooters and bikes offer more value for the money and are safer when compared to the 2004 Metropolitan II. However, riders did prefer the design and lower maintenance costs associated with the 2004 Metropolitan II.

Honda Metropolitan / Giorno (NCH50)

Honda has sold two distinct generations of the Metropolitan in North America. The first generation (model code CHF50) was sold from 2002 to 2009 and is dealt with separately. The second generation is the focus here, which was first offered for 2013 and remains on sale as of 2018. Substantial revisions were made to this generation for 2016 including a new motor and revised body panels. In Canada this model was called the Giorno.Names, Model Codes and VersionsThis model introduced for 2013 was known internally to Honda as the NCH50 and it is badged as the Giorno in every worldwide market except for the USA, where the Metropolitan name is used. Starting in 2016, Honda switched to offering a slight variant of this model which is called the Giorno Clip in some markets (e.g. Japan), just the Giorno in others (e.g. Canada) and still the Metropolitan in the USA. This revised version uses a slightly different model code of NCW50. Overseas the Giorno name plate has been in use for a while, so don’t confuse the older more vintage styled Giorno (1992 - 1999) with recent iterations. The prior generation of Metropolitan was Honda’s CHF50 model, which was badged as the Metropolitan / Jazz / Crea / Scoopy in various markets, so this NCH50 Metropolitan is an entirely different scooter that shares virtually nothing with first Met. The frame, engine and style are all new. The gauges and every body panel save the front fender are changed. Also new are the seat, front forks, handlebars and storage cubby hole. The rims, front fender and a few smaller bits are all that carried over.Honda substantially updated this second generation Metropolitan for 2016 with gently revised styling and a switch to a liquid cooled motor. These changes include new rims, new gauges, revised side panel styling and a new look for the upper legshield.Design and AmenitiesThe 2002-2009 Metropolitan used plastic body panels mounted to an advanced aluminum frame. This second generation Metropolitan abandons this expensive frame and instead utilizes lower cost steel tubing. Despite this, weight savings elsewhere mean the total weight is up only 3 lbs to 179. The NCH50 is about 40 lbs lighter than a steel bodied Vespa, and continues to allow much easier and cheaper to replacement of damaged body panels.Version 1: 2013 - 2015 The Metropolitan / Giorno had a large storage cubby hole in the leg shield and a small hook above that, whereas the previous generation had neither. Unfortunately Metropolitan loses the gas tank located internally in the floorboard and instead uses a gas tank positioned under the seat. This simpler gravity fed system allows for a lower cost, but it does consume some of the underseat storage space. Still, many full face helmets will fit. Fuel tanks located under the seat are the norm, so the Metropolitan / Giorno surrenders its previous advantage in this area in exchange for a lower MSRP.Like the previous generation, drum brakes are used front and rear in the Metropolitan, which results in lackluster but okay braking. It would have been nice to see a disc brake included like most competitors, but larger riders can upgrade the front brake for a few hundred in aftermarket parts if desired.

The restyled dash of the Metropolitan continues to be tastefully styled. There’s a speedometer, fuel gauge, odometer and a few small warming lights. The rear shock carries over from generation one, but the inverted front forks are new. Hopefully they are an improvement over the forks in the early Metropolitan which were widely panned as being too soft and easy to bottom out. Version 2: 2016 - PresentHonda ticked off nearly every request on Metropolitan owners wish lists for 2016 with their overhaul of the Metropolitan (now NCW50). The motor was replaced with a new liquid cooled AF74E engine (see motor section below), the fuel tank was relocated into the floorboard and more storage was freed up. Honda replaced the large open storage area in the legshield with a smaller open cubby hole under the ignition and a great new closable glovebox beside it. It’s the perfect place for your insurance papers. Under the seat Honda added a substantial amount of storage thanks to the relocation of the 1.2 gallon fuel tank down into the floorboard. Accordingly, the revised Met is about as good as it gets for storage in a 50cc. Honda also updated the style for 2016 with new rims, new color accents on the rear flanks and new details on the front of the leg shield. The core frame carries over for 2016, so with enough effort most of the updates for 2016 should be retrofittable to 2013-2015 Mets.MotorFrom 2013-2015 the NCH50 Metropolitan used Honda’s AF70E motor, which gave up liquid cooling found in the first generation Met motor (GET2), but gained PGM-Fi (fuel injection). Honda claims 4.5 HP @ 8250 RPM for the new motor which is similar to the old GET2 but top speed is lower by a few mph (37-38 mph instead of 40-42). Fuel milage is slightly higher, as Honda is claiming a 3mpg boost to 117mpg. Real world economy in mixed conditions is right around 100 mpg. The AF70E motor is bottom hung (mounted from beneath the engine) instead of top mounted like the GET2. This means you can’t swap this engine into an older Metropolitan or vice versa without extensive frame modifications.For 2016 Honda made the switch to the new liquid cooled AF74E motor. The AF74E has similar power (4.4 HP @ 8000 RPM, 3.0 lbs-ft torque @ 7500 RPM) and is also bottom swung, so it may be swappable into earlier NCH50 Mets. The big gain with the new motor is liquid cooling, which gives longer engine life, better performance and better efficiency. The improved cooling lets Honda go high compression (now 12.0:1 instead of 10.1:1), top speed has risen back to 40-42mph and fuel economy is about 10% better. The AF74E engine incorporates a number of engineering tricks first used in the GET2 motor found in the Ruckus and first generation Metropolitan, such as a tiny radiator mounted on the side of the motor and cooled by a fan on the flywheel, and a reversible alternator design that doubles as the starter motor.DiscussionHonda clearly set out to compete more aggressively on price with the 2013-2015 Metropolitan, which lowered the MSRP at a time when most competitors were creeping upwards. The NCH50 was a capable scooter and sold well, but was a step back technologically for Honda (steel frame, air-cooled). With the 2016 upgrade to the NCW50 version, Honda addressed most of the critiques of the ’13-’15 scooter (air cooling, lower top speed, no proper glovebox) but also raised the price $400. Now it’s a very similar proposition as the original CHF50 Met: the best engineered 50cc on the market but at a price higher than most.The NCH50 is a well built scooter - probably the best built - and it offers a great list of features plus Honda’s renowned quality. You’re not going to find another 50cc with the same quality of motor and the storage amenities are unsurpassed. Still, all this costs money and you may be interested in a lower cost scooter rather than the best engineered scooter. A few other machines worth considering are Genuine’s Buddy (aka PGO Metro), Yamaha’s Vino 50, SYM’s Mio 50 and Kymco’s Like 50 and Compagno 50. Ignoring price, these scooters rank in quality as Metropolitan, Vino, Like 50, Buddy, Compagno and then Mio 50 (best to worst). The main reasons for straying from a Metropolitan are if you like the styling of another machine, want to spend less on entry level machine or find a great deal. 2009 Honda Metropolitan

Intro

While there are many different scooters on the market today, the 2009 Honda Metropolitan offers unique specifications which make it unlike any bike currently on the road. For any rider who desires a unique look and a one-of-a-kind driving experience the Metropolitan is the bike to try.

The Metropolitan is a classically styled scooter that traditionally comes in a red color with gray trim along its plastic body frame. With a weight of just 176 pounds and a seat height of a mere 28.3 inches, this bike is perfectly suited for smaller and beginning riders, as well as youngsters just getting on a bike for the first time. Despite its small frame, the Honda Metropolitan is still equipped with passenger seating, allowing for a companion to join on the open road, while a built-in windscreen protects the vision of both the driver and passenger.

While the 2009 Honda Metropolitan is smaller in size, it still packs a mean punch once its wheels hit the pavement. The bike is equipped with an SOHC, four-stroke, single-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission, which allows this scooter to hit a top cruising speed of 40 mph on the road. The Metropolitan runs on regular gasoline, and with a fuel capacity of just 1.3 gallons, it doesn’t require much gas to run at optimal levels.

“I’ve owned and ridden many different types of motorcycles over the last 35 years. Yet the Honda Metropolitan has one very unique and cool feature that nothing else I’ve ridden has. More on that later. I have two Metropolitans, both 2009 models, one in “monza” red and the other in “graphite” dark grey/light grey.

The Metropolitan is roughly the same size as an old small frame Vespa. I’m 5’ 11”, and weigh 155 lbs and fit okay on the Metro, though it took a bit of practice to find the most comfortable riding/foot position. The small size of the bike, coupled with the very low center of gravity and the 10” wheels, make for a super response ride. The bike responds to commands instantly, and can dart and weave about traffic and urban settings like a Jack Russell Terrier chasing a cat.

As for the styling, the Metropolitan resembles a cross between a Lambretta LD of 1955 at the front end, combined with a Vespa 50 of 1963 at the back. It’s a very curvy design, I like it, obviously as I own two of them, but you may not. Fair enough, style is an each to their own thing. Honda tends to favor the Lambretta two tone paint styles. Few Metros have come in a single solid color from the factory. Handlebars are exposed, the speedometer and fuel gauge are combined in a slick little pod, while the turn signal indicator is a welded to the handlebars in an aftermarket looking setup. Instead of the aircraft landing wheel style of front suspension that Vespa’s have, it has simple forks. The wheels on all Metros are an old Honda steel design that dates back to the early 80’s and the Aero 50. Surely Honda could do better than this ancient steel rim, but that’s what we get.

The brakes are often much maligned in various reviews I’ve read, called everything from “merely adequate” to “useless”. I disagree. At no time have I ever felt that the brakes, drums front and rear, were not up for the challenge of slowing me from any speed or in any situation. This is a light bike, 176 pounds with a tank of fuel, and while drum brakes may be medieval in 2011 they still work acceptably for this scooter.

Indeed the brakes have one of my favorite features, the combined braking system which links front and rear brakes. A pull of the left brake handle activates both rear and some, not all, of the front brake. For a lot of simple about town buzzing around I’ve found that simply using the left handle to brake works well enough, making a simple ride even simpler. (disclaimer, of course you are always supposed to use front and rear brakes equally, etc, etc,) I’ve done some informal measuring of the amount of front brake being applied by the combined system, it’s about 2/3rds on my two Metropolitans.

One of the things I find that scares off some potential motorcycle riders is the idea of grabbing too much front brake and going over the handlebars. Having gone over a few handlebars myself as a young man, this fear is not without basis. With the combined braking system a new rider can rest a bit easier as they learn how the brake, let the combined system do the chores for a while as you learn how to navigate traffic, balance the machine, and keep out of the way of that giant Chevy SUV with the inattentive driver who is talking on his phone, adjusting his music, and eating French Fries.

The Metro’s ride is surprisingly pleasant, considering that it only has a single rear shock and limited travel. The roads in my burg are what could be described as “neglected improperly maintained rubbish” and yet the Met handles the bumps fine. I had my doubts about the 10” wheels but they do the job, just don’t hit any of the gaping potholes that extend the to center of the Earth.

One thing that excited me about the Metropolitan was the engine, and it’s a classic Honda beauty of sophistication and polish. Liquid cooled, rare in the 50cc class, and incredibly fuel efficient. My last tank’s mileage was an honest 101.4mpg, and that’s pretty much at wide open throttle all the time on acceleration. It has an ECU which manages the timing, auto choke, electric fuel pump, alternator and the slick way it uses the alternator as a starter. It starts up pretty much dead silently, uses the alternator to spin the engine, very neat. The stock muffler has a catalytic converter, which I like the idea of taming the pollution some, and it’s so quiet at idle that you can easily have a conversation with bystanders without shutting off the bike. If you are of the loud pipes philosophy then you will find the Met’s utter lack of exhaust note disappointing. There is a goofy little kick starter that’s fun to use a time or two. There is no side stand so you are forced to use the center stand all the time. That’s quite easy as the bike weighs so little, and was one factor in my wife choosing the Metropolitan over a new Elite.

Now for the performance, an area of some controversy with the Metro. Most reviews I read, from the motorcycle mags and such, label the performance weak at best. I disagree. The engine is no barn burner, it’s only a 49cc 4-stroke, but I can keep up with traffic around town. I’ve never felt like I’m totally out classed on the Met in urban driving, it’s no barn burner for sure, but then most traffic isn’t either in urban settings. I’ve owned 50cc 2-strokes in the past, which have been quicker to top speed, but again I don’t feel that the Met is the terrible weak machine that it’s been labeled to be by some reviewers. You do have to use the throttle, I’m almost always at WOT when picking up speed, so you have to work it for sure. But full disclosure here is required, I’ve removed the restriction plates from our 2009 Metros which limit the amount of fuel/air charge that can enter the cylinder. This plate is an easy removal, loosen the carb and pull the plate out. It does not add to top end at all, but improves acceleration and speed holding ability. (not all Mets have this restriction plate)

Now when the roads move up to speeds of 45mph and faster is when the Met runs out of steam. My Metro will do 40-41mph consistently, while my wife can hit 43mph on hers. Weight of the rider is clearly a factor here as she only weighs in at 125 pounds. Indeed she can always accelerate faster than me, and can pass with me ease when I’m doing my top speed. Some mathematically inclined fellow I read once theorized that the Metropolitan was good for 46mph, with it’s gear ratios and power output and rev limiter, which of course was then cut down by wind resistance and weight and rolling resistance.

Adding a windshield makes a significant, in Metro terms, speed improvement. With a Honda windshield my Metro can hit 43mph regularly and my wife can hit 44mph. Headwinds are the bane of the Met, it can cut my speed down to 37mph if the wind is strong. But with the windshield I can maintain 39-40mph in the same wind. Also my acceleration is faster with the windshield. Of course the darn Honda windshield is a little over a hundred bucks, so that’s a lot of money for 2-4mph speed increase. Worth it? You decide.

Build quality is top notch, as expected. Plastic panels over a very neat aluminum cast frame. The plastic is actually painted, not molded in color, which is nice for polishing and making the machine shine up well. A full face helmet fits under the seat, at least mine does, and there is a grocery sack hanger beneath the handlebars as well. The Metro’s claimed maximum cargo weight is 277 pounds, which is significantly more than one would expect.

One problem area is the ignition cylinder. Fitting the key in can be an exercise in futility as the key has to be aligned perfectly to go in. Add that Honda did not set up the cylinder so that you can see it easily from the seat, you have to bend down to see the alignment, and inserting the key is like trying to thread a needle behind your back. I ended up doing some minor sanding on my key itself to smooth jagged edges, and also shooting a lot of waterproof lubricant into the cylinder. This helped, but it’s still a problem.

The gas gauge is also pretty goofy, it stays on full till you’ve used up quite a bit of that little tank. Then it starts to drop and fast, Honda could have done a better job here on accuracy as you don’t have a lot of gas, 1.3 US gallons, to play with.

As for that one thing I mentioned that the Metro has that is a cool and unique feature, well it’s the response it gets from people. No other motorcycle I’ve owned or ridden, and that ranges from sport bikes to cruisers to standards to dirt bikes to mopeds, has gotten the positive reaction that the Metropolitan gets. People smile as you go by, they wave, they give a thumbs up. At stop lights people in cars ask about it, does it run on gas or is it electric, where did I get it, how much are they. Countless comments of “cool” and “nice bike”. It’s a total kid magnet, park in any neighborhood and the kids start coming over, “how fast does it go?” and “can I have a ride?”

Now I’ve never owned any scooter that had the traditional Italian look, so perhaps this reaction is common to some readers. But for me and my wife it’s been a new and fun part of owning the Metro, the positive feelings it generates in passersby is unlike any other motorcycle experience I’ve had.

Overall the Metropolitan is a very solid machine for around town scooting. I find that it’s now my ride of choice when I have errands to run, or to ride to work, because it’s so easy to use and plain fun to ride.”
